Blockchain art will be a financial asset class
One under-appreciated aspect of digital art on Ethereum is that NFTs are an asset class just like cryptocurrencies. We can buy, sell, trade, auction, and hold these valuable assets today. In the future, we foresee a field of finance around NFTs just like we have around cryptocurrencies today in the form of #DeFi.
In short order, we will be able to borrow, lend, crowdfund, and cooperatively own works. We will also be able use valuable works as collateral — perhaps in systems like MakerDAO — in order to obtain a loan. Index funds of artcoins or tokenized NFT art collections will enable investors to buy into this space with great ease. And best of all, creators will enjoy a high degree of liquidity in their work which will enable opportunities for full time work in this space.
So what’s next? Better marketplaces, more liquidity, fractionalized ownership in works and portfolios, more personal currencies from creators, and mobile experiences which create more engagement and improve the market.
